Along with Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is one of the few octuple champions in sports. But with such a feat, the former competitive swimmer cannot help but be impressed by Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s record as an undefeated boxer.
Mayweather now holds a professional boxing record of 50 wins and 0 loss. Phelps took to Twitter to share his amazement.
Mayweather won his 50th professional boxing match on August 26, 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, United States. He defeated first-time boxer and mixed martial artist Conor McGregor via technical knockout via referee stoppage in Round 10.
McGregor is a former Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight champion and the reigning UFC lightweight champion. He currently holds a professional MMA record of 21 wins and 3 losses.
On November 30, 2016, McGregor obtained a professional boxing license from the California State Athletic Commission. His professional boxing debut was confirmed six months later.
Boxing fans are polarized when it comes to McGregor’s loss to Mayweather. Others say the UFC fighter just cannot box while others applaud him for showing a great performance despite losing to one of the best boxers of all time.
Some MMA fans, particularly those who support McGregor, would like to see a rematch between the UFC champion and Mayweather in the MMA cage. Others, however, simply want to see the two stay in their lane.
Meanwhile, Phelps announced his retirement on August 12, 2016. With a total of 28 medals, he is the most decorated Olympian of all time.
Phelps’s last event was the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He won five gold medals and one silver.
