Miss Universe 1999 Mpule Keneilwe Kwelagobe of Botswana was 20 when she crowned her successor at the Eleftheria Indoor Hall in Nicosia, Cyprus on May 12, 2000. It is the 49th edition of the international beauty pageant.

Kwelagobe is the first ever Miss Universe from Botswana. She was crowned at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago on May 26, 1999.

Lara Dutta

Winning Miss Universe 2000 made Lara Dutta the second Miss Universe from India. She followed Sushmita Sen, who was crowned in 1994.

Runner-up to Dutta was Claudia Moreno of Venezuela. The second runner-up was Helen Lindes of Spain while Kim Yee of Canada and Lynette Cole of the United States finished in the Top 5.

Lindes was Miss Photogenic and Tamara Scaroni of Aruba was Miss Congeniality. Letty Murray of Mexico won the Best National Costume award.

While reigning as Miss Universe 2000, Dutta traveled to 42 countries and territories. On April 16, 2022, she turned 44.
