Julian Ortega of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States was 21 years old when he fought his fellow Miami resident Jorge J. Masvidal Jr. at the HOOKnSHOOT event “Absolute Fighting Championships 6” on December 6, 2003. The latter was 19.

Based in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana, USA, HooknSHOOT held “AFC 6” at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. There were 10 mixed martial artist matches on the card.

The sixth match was a welterweight bout between Masvidal and Ortega. After three 5-minute rounds, the referee raised the hand of Masvidal, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Losing to Masvidal downgraded Ortega’s professional MMA record to 2 wins and 1 losses. Ortega made his professional MMA debut on July 18, 2000.

It was Masvidal’s fourth professional MMA win. The first three opponents he defeated were Brendan Bledsoe, Brian Geraghty and Rolando Delgado.

Masvidal was born in Miami to Jorge Masvidal Fernandez Sr., 47, and Maria Carmen Masvidal, 42. When Jorge Jr. defeated Ortega at “AFC 6” on December 6, 2003, Jorge Sr. was 47 and Maria was 42.

Raised in Miami, Jorge Jr. attended St. Brendan High School in Westchester, Miami-Dade County. While in high school, he competed in wrestling but he failed to stay eligible because of his grades.

On May 24, 2003, Jorge Jr. made his professional MMA debut. On November 12, 2024, he turned 40.

Masvidal is 5’11” tall while Ortega is 6’0″ tall. The latter retired from professional MMA after losing to the former at “AFC 6”.
