Fighting out of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States was 18 years old when he made his professional mixed martial arts debut on May 24, 2003. That day, the Cuban-Peruvian-American MMA fighter was one of the winners at the HOOKnSHOOT event “Absolute Fighting Championships 3” at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida.

Founded by Jeff Osborne in 1995, HOOKnSHOOT was based in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana, USA. Its last event was held on March 3, 2017.

There were a total of nine MMA matches on HOOKnSHOOT ‘s “AFC 3” card. The first match was a welterweight bout between Masvidal and Brandon Bledsoe, then 28, of Knoxville, Tennessee, USA.

The referee stopped the welterweight contest after 3 minutes and 55 seconds in the first round. Masvidal knocked out Bledsoe via punches.

Losing to Masvidal downgraded Bledsoe’s professional MMA record to 6 wins and 8 losses. The fighter from Knoxville made his professional MMA debut on September 28, 1998.

Raised in Miami, Masvidal attended St. Brendan High School in Westchester, Miami-Dade County. He competed in wrestling there but he failed to stay eligible because of his grades.

Masvidal is 5’11” tall. He was born in Miami to Jorge Masvidal Fernandez Sr., 47, and Maria Carmen Masvidal, 41.

Jorge Sr. is Cuban. Maria is Peruvian.

In 1971, Jorge Sr. immigrated from Cuba to the U.S. In 1989, he was arrested on federal drug charges.

From 2013 to 2023, Jorge Jr. competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. On November 12, 2024, he turned 40.
