Emma Jean Compton Layne of Halifax County, Virginia, United States was married to Russell Wayne Layne of Nathalie, Halifax County. On March 6, 2017, she turned 52.
Emma was 5’0″ tall and she weighed 135 pounds. She was born in South Boston, Halifax County to Carroll Walker Compton and Sylvia Whitlow McCurry.
Sylvia was born in Halifax County to George H. Whitlow and Gladys Whitt Whitlow. Compton was born in Halifax County to Joseph Faulkner Compton and Emma Walker Layne Compton.
Carroll turned 80 on June 17, 2008. He died on February 11, 2009.

Emma owned a convenience store in Cody, Halifax County called the Cody Store. At 7:00 p.m. on June 17, 2017, she closed the store as she did every Saturday and by 7:30 p.m., she had finished with the closing duties and left the store.
On June 20, 2017, Emma was reported missing. Russell, then 60, was not considered a person of interest in the case.
Emma is Shawna Compton Krohn and Wynona Compton Childress‘s sister. When Emma disappeared, their mother was ill and was in the hospital.
On July 14, 2017, Sylvia turned 89. On October 15, 2017, she died in Nathalie.
Russell Wayne Layne
On November 22, 2017, hunters found Emma’s remains scattered across the ground in a shallow grave in a heavily wooded area on Sandy Ridge Road in Nathalie. It is less than a mile from the property she and Russell owned.
The remains were transported to the medical examiner’s office in Richmond, Virginia for autopsy, examination and positive identification. In January 2018, the remains were positively identify as Emma’s.
On November 27, 2024, Russell was arrested and served with an indictment for murder. He was booked into the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority in Lynchburg, Virginia, which is around 36 miles away from Cody.
