Donald Trump, 78, is still interested in buying Greenland. On December 22, 2024, the president-elect of the United States said ownership of Denmark’s territory is an absolute necessity for the U.S. for purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world.

Hours after Trump made this statement, the Danish government announced its plan to increase its defense budget for Greenland. According to Denmark’s defense minister Troels Lund Poulsen, 48, it is a double digit billion amount in krone, which is at least $1.5 billion.

The budget will be spent on two extra dog sled teams, two new long-range drones and two new inspection ships, Poulsen announced. It will also fund the increased staffing at Arctic Command in Nuuk, Greenland and an upgrade for one of the three main civilian airports of the territory to handle F-35 supersonic fighter aircraft.

There are two autonomous territories within Denmark namely the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Citizens of both territories are full citizens of the European country.

Greenland is the worlds’s largest island. It is home to Kaffeklubben Island, the northernmost undisputed point of land on Earth.

In response to Trump’s statement, Greenland’s prime minister Múte Bourup Egede, 37, declared that the territory is not for sale. The Greenlandic leader stated, “Greenland is ours.”

“We are not for sale and will never be for sale,” Egede emphasized. “We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

This is not the first time Trump expressed his desire to buy Greenland. When he suggested this in 2019, Denmark’s prime minister Mette Fredericksen, now 47, described it as an absurd idea.

Trump served as the 45th U.S. president from January 20, 2017 to January 20, 2021. He will assume office as the country’s 47th president on January 20, 2025.

From 1996 to 2015, Trump owned Miss Universe. Representing Denmark, Victoria Kjær Theilvig, 21, won the beauty pageant’s 73rd edition at the Arena Ciudad de México in Azcapotzalco, Mexico City, Mexico on November 16, 2024.
