Masahisa Fukase
Masahisa Fukase (深瀬 昌久) was a Japanese photographer born in Bifuka, Hokkaido, Japan. Yukiyo Kawakami, Yōko Wanibe and Rika Mikanagi were his respective first, second and third wives.
Featuring photos Fukase took between 1976 and 1982, the photobook “Karasu” (Ravens) was released in 1986. In 1992, he fell down the steps of Nami, a bar in Golden Gai, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan and suffered traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma.
Fukase remained in coma until his death. In 2010, the British Journal of Photography convened a panel of five experts who declared “Karasu” as the best photobook published between 1986 and 2009.
On February 25, 2012, Fukase turned 78. On June 9, 2012, he died.
“Ravens”
Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan, Tadanobu Asano (浅野 忠信) turned 51 on November 27, 2024. He was married to Miwa “Chara” Watabiki from 1995 to 2009 and has been married to Kurumi Nakata since 2022.
Asano played Kashigi Yabushige in “Shōgun“, which premiered on February 27, 2024 on FX and FX on Hulu. His co-stars include Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow and Fumi Nikaido.
In 2024, Asano starred in the films “The Box Man” and “The Women in the Lakes”. In 2025, he will star in at least four films namely “Ravens”, “Kanasando”, “Broken Rage” and “Mortal Kombat 2”.
Written and directed by Mark Gill, “Ravens” is about the life and work of Fukase. Asano plays the late photographer with Kumi Takiuchi as Wanibe.
“Ravens” made it to the main competition slate of the 28th Málaga Film Festival, which runs in Málaga, Andalusia, Spain from March 14-23, 2025. Also in the cast are Sosuke Ikematsu as Morio Shoda, Kanji Furutachi as Sukezo Fukase and Go Jbiki as Toshiteru Fukase.
