Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, of Victoria-Fraserview, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is not Filipino. He is Taiwanese.
Lo is Alexander Lo‘s younger brother. More than 10 years ago, they moved from Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Vancouver with their parents.
Shortly after arriving in Vancouver, Alexander and Kai-Ji’s father died of an illness. Kai-Ji attended the University of British Columbia (UBC) School of Business in Vancouver.
Alexander Lo
Alexander worked in Cirque du Soleil, an entertainment company based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was the victim of the first homicide in Vancouver in 2024.
Accused of killing Alexander was his fellow Vancouver resident Dwight William Kematch. From February 2022 to August 2023, the suspect worked as a construction safety supervisor at the Onni Group of Companies in the city.
At around 1:00 on January 28, 2024, Alexander was found dead on the floor of a residence on Henry Street near Knight Street and East 33rd Avenue in Vancouver. He was 31.
Kematch was arrested at the scene. He was then 39.
On January 29, 2024, Kematch was charged with second-degree homicide. On February 6, 2024, Kai-Ji wrote an open letter to Alexander in a GoFundMe page.
“I know you loved Cirque Du Soleil, a show you invited us to watch multiple times,” Kai-Ji wrote. “It saddens me that we will never have the chance to watch it together. I will do my best to dedicate a show in your name. I discovered that you worked as an usher there, and I will contact the company to honor a show in your name before it starts. I will be there with you and our mother, reserving a seat for you alongside your favorite Disney character.”
Kai-Ji Adam Lo
In August 2024, Kai-Ji’s mother Lisa Lo tried to take her own life. After this, health care professionals and police officers in Vancouver had significant interactions with him.
On April 26, 2025, a family member contacted a hospital psych ward and reported that Kai-Ji was suffering from delusions and paranoia. Later that day, he drove a black Audi Q7 into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu Day festival, a Filipino event, outside John Oliver Secondary School in Vancouver, killing 11 people and injuring dozens more.
The youngest person killed was 5 and the oldest was 65. Their names have yet to be released.
Kai-Ji was arrested at the scene. On April 27, 2025, he was charged with eight counts of second-degree murder.
